This is a photo of Marty O’Reilly and The Old Soul Orchestra from the Hotel Utah in San Francisco, Aug. 24, 2014. I was there with The Littlest Birds splitting the show with them.
I like this photo because of the movement / inherent energy it captures while maintaining the microphone in stillness and focus, which is, in a sense the nature of a live performance for an artist. Most often the mic does not move with you, nor does it move with the crowd, but together you move, and you go places, and you express emotions via that stationary object as your transmitter.
There is a sense of loneliness in the microphone, a sense of duty in the hunched back, and yet a sense of commitment. We are bound to express. There is no escaping the need to express our music. Here, Marty O’Reilly is fully expressing his music.
